It's been a wonderful two weeks of sporting brilliance from the Paris 2024 Olympics. A New Chapter for Sports!


It's been a wonderful two weeks of sporting brilliance from the Paris 2024 Olympics games. But it was more than that; it was also a stage that illustrated what Sports and Infrastructure, when done right, can produce. For us, it was an Olympics that looked Beyond the Games and took seriously the multiple interrelated risks to Opportunity and the Conditions for Opportunity. As a result, it was a plan that took exclusion and wealth inequality and the imbalances it creates seriously; we are all aware that exclusion hinders economic growth by creating barriers to full participation in the labour market and economy; it destroys one's capacity for control and one's social and economic strategic autonomy. It also lowers consumer demand, which lowers innovation and production opportunities. Dealing with exclusion and wealth inequality is right for productivity growth; it is right for innovation; and it is essential to ensuring a competitive advantage. 

 
As a result, we saw an Olympic that showcased the following Pillars: Green, Inclusive, Economically Viable, Community Development and Sustainable. How do we know this? It seems that by placing the games in the youngest, fastest, and poorest department in France, the organisers were taking into consideration Spatial Opportunity. They set about Constructing Opportunity through Sports and Infrastructure. Taking into considerations the effect of Infrastructure on Investment, both local and Corporate. Additionally, the effects of Infrastructure on Place and Place upon individual outcomes and socioeconomic outcomes (the Geography of Opportunity). As such, they take a long-term view of Value, knowing that over time Value will increase and the communities and economy will reap the rewards from enhanced returns on Spatial Opportunity and Outcomes, i.e., Human Capital, Natural Capital, Economic Capital, Intellectual Capital, Social Capital, involvement in the labour force and job quality. More importantly, inter generational mobility.


This was an Olympic that will meet the long-term Economic and Social needs of the communities in which they were based for generations to come. After 100 years, one would expect Greatness of this kind, something that changes the perception of Sports and Infrastructure for the next 100 years.
